Our journey from a normal bed and breakfast to an eco-friendly Gîte in the Camargue

Step by step. Change needs time to take hold.

Ecology and sustainability are the NEW luxury of tourism.

Ursula had already made this statement at the end of 2017.

We are committed to creating an eco-friendly and sustainable experience whilst maintaining a high standard of service. This includes using renewable energy, operating in a lean way and working in the community to reduce our human impact on the planet.

Does the term ‘eco’ seem risky to you in a high-standard guest house? Can it really be professional and chic? We definitely say YES. We’re even convinced that ecology and sustainability are the new ‘luxury’ in tourism.

Forget the image of being dirty and out of this world. In our eyes, ecological or responsible action, right down to minimalism, is the logical trend for the future.

Envie de Sud is located in the Petite Camargue, which is part of an important ecosystem – shaped in the past by humans, of course. Tourism plays an important role, but we still have the opportunity to influence the way we do it.

We may be idealistic, yes, but we think it’s better to do something than to talk about it or wait for others to do it.

Organic products from the market

Priority to seasonal vegetables. A little poultry and fish. We have virtually no leftovers because we’re very experienced at calculating quantities. We immediately incorporate any leftovers into the next meal.

Recycle & transform

Antique furniture and objects add charm and are a more sustainable choice.

Our picnic in stainless steel boxes is stylish.

Bed linen & towels

Our guests decide how often they want to change their sheets and towels. We use an organic detergent based on an old homemade recipe.

Our customers appreciate our eco-responsible approach

We don`t impose anything – we inspire.

What, we ask ourselves today, prevented us at Envie de Sud in the Camargue from following this eco-responsible path so consistently from the outset?
Well, for economic and organisational reasons, we couldn’t change all the technology in the house overnight. Before investing a lot of money, we wanted to be sure that Envie de Sud would be successful and would be reserved. And very importantly, we wanted to familiarise ourselves with the house first. Such a large 1850 house with up to 19 guests in a climate new to us is complex to understand. A conversion has to be well thought out. And even then, there are surprises…

The fear that our guests wouldn’t accept the offer and would describe us as a shabby, uncomfortable eco-hotel probably played a part.

And finally, our knowledge of ecology has also grown considerably over the last 7 years. New projects were presented to us and we jumped into the deep end. This is how life is supposed to be: full of surprises and adventures. Lasting adventures.

  • Opening in April 2017

    A start. Far from ideal.

The energy balance of the house was inadequate. We produced a lot of waste. Only about 35% of the products we bought were organically produced. We served meat or fish at every table d’hôtes. Other things we did right from the start: We bought locally. We used environmentally friendly cleaning products. We installed water-saving taps. We repaired objects and used energy-saving appliances and, of course, we bought second-hand furniture and decorative items and recycled them.

  • In 2018 reduced waste and installed compost

We have also increased our consumption of plant-based foods.

  • In 2019, we’ve said goodbye to plastic.

    Increase of organic products 60%.

We’ve given up plastic packaging for good and started buying in bulk and in ‘zero waste’ shops. We’re still struggling to understand whether it’s better to buy organic or non-organic but locally produced products. We did a project study: changing the technology in our building. Insulation, heating, cooling, hot water production – all environmentally friendly. Without compromising the comfort and style of our guests.

  • In January 2020, we reached our biggest milestone... Envie de Sud has gone green!

    Heat pump installation

The house is now energy-efficient. Unfortunately, the town did not give permission to install solar panels. We’ve started growing organic vegetables. We’ve given up all processed foods – everything is now home-made. We have zero food waste thanks to our à la carte breakfast. Over 75% organic produce.

  • In 2021, we developed our "green thumb" and began producing organic wine.

90% of our products are organic

We respect the seasons and discover old varieties of vegetables. We have bought a vineyard and decided to cultivate it according to biodynamic principles. We’re also planning a biodiversity hedge with fruit and nut trees and shrubs. Unfortunately, we’re still waiting for permission to install solar panels.

  • At the end of December 2021, we passed the national "sustainable tourism" audit with an exceptional score of 18.8 points out of 20!

In 2021, France is launching a large-scale national programme to make businesses (trade and tourism) sustainable. The first stage is an extensive audit covering 8 areas and a total of 37 subjects. Envie de Sud scored an excellent 18.8 points out of a possible 20.

  • 2022 the city announces a change to the PLU

Can the photovoltaic system finally be installed?

Good news: public transport in the region will be expanded – more trains and more buses – so that our guests can leave their cars at home.

  • 2023 We take part in PLU meetings

Things are not moving in Vauvert...no public transport, no photovoltaics...sometimes it depresses us.

If we had been able to install the photovoltaic system in 2019, it would already have paid for itself today. We’re not giving up… the sun will still be shining almost every day in Vauvert in 2024.

2023 We take part in PLU meetings

Patience, everything comes at the right time

Meanwhile, we’re drinking tea

But we’re not giving up. No excuses!
