The Vauverdoises have a passion for running

Foulées des Halles, Grand Raid de Camargue, Bip-bip Ekiden, Nocturne de Nîmes, trail du Pont du Gard… the runners and Nordic Walking enthusiasts of the Camargue are spoilt for choice. Every weekend, running clubs organize competitions and events in the region. From a fun run for the people and companies to a 100km race across the Camargue – the Grand Raid de Camargue, which takes place at the end of September.

Our Envie de Sud guest Marina travelled from Germany to start her first 100km run. In the morning she took the shuttle bus from Vauvert to Salin-de-Girod and at 7am the starting signal was given. The route leads through the unique Camargue countryside: glittering salt fields, vast ponds with pink flamingos, picturesque beaches, Camargue horses and black bulls as well as famous wineries. Passing the city wall of Aigues-Mortes, the Tour Carbonnière and the Canal de Rhône à Sète. The runners are on their own for miles. The terrain in the nature reserve is often impassable, the wind is sometimes rough and the sun is shining. This year it was joined by rain. The first drops in the region for months. A blessing for the farmers, an additional challenge for the runners.

The finish line for all participants, whether 100km, marathon or 21km is in the arena of Vauvert. After our evening jogging session, we visit the arena.  Happy faces, award ceremonies, eager helpers whirl and distribute drinks and food. The Maire shakes hands, as he does on every occasion.

Are the Vauverdoises a nation of joggers? Obviously, yes. Andreas and I joined a running club. Twice a week we train in the group. The surrounding area offers a surprisingly varied terrain through vineyards, forest paths and pastures. What we have already explored alone, we now get to know better week after week. It’s definitely getting easier in society. Some people quack. Others run quite ambitious. Many start on weekends at competitions. Some of them even at the 100km run through the Camargue described above. Recently, Christoffer, our president, suggested at the end of the jogging round, to ring the bell at club member Mike. He offered his ten surprise guests a beer. A sympathetic gesture.

On February 4,2018, the Running Club E. V. A. Vauvert organize for the 31st time the foulée of the Halles. A convivial run of 5 or 12 km for recreational athletes and running duos. Wouldn’t this be a perfect opportunity to spend a few nice days in the Envie de Sud? Get to know the wonderful area, start the running season in a relaxed way and indulge yourself with delicious food in the Envie de Sud. Devote yourself to doing nothing or read a book by the fireplace. According to experts, February also offers the best light and unique opportunities for nature observations in the nearby Centre de Scamandre or at the Maison de Grand Site near Aigues-Mortes. We look forward to seeing you.

Cordially,

Andreas et Ursula
