I would outline more or less the same points in an interview today…

“Hospitality is a true passion and you should go for it when your heart tells you that this is the right thing”.

In collaboration with Valérie, our French teacher, we offer an intensive week of learning French and enjoying the beautiful Envie de Sud.

The ideal introduction to refresh rusty knowledge and have fun together. Very motivated beginners are also welcome. Valérie has 20 years of experience teaching French to foreigners…so there’s no reason why you shouldn’t give it a try.

Excursions à la carte (Aigues-Mortes, horse riding, to the sea…) We are happy to organize excursions in the surrounding area, either together or individually. At the welcome dinner on the day of arrival we will make suggestions and then we will discuss how the week should look like. If you feel like it, you can join us if you prefer to travel on your own or if you want to sit over the books in the afternoon, no problem.

Single or double room with breakfast and 4 dinners During 7 nights you will stay in a comfortable single or double room. Every morning a healthy and rich breakfast awaits you and on 4 evenings we spoil you with delicious food and local wine.

Reservation and information Call us or send us an email. We are looking forward to your visit! Accompanying persons are of course also welcome…whereby participating is naturally nicer!

Vauvert, Nîmes and Arles – Cultural Pearls 2018

We are delighted to read what the tourism industry’s trade press is predicting: in 2018, more than a third of travellers would prefer a Chambres d’ Hôtes instead of a hotel complex. They seek the discreet attention of their hosts and they long for an authentic travel experience. Local food and drinks are central. And many would choose Vintage Travel – returning to the places where they were with their parents as a child. It is also a trend to combine holidays with the attendance of a cultural event. It’s no wonder: The New York Times Magazine lists Arles as “place to visit in 2018”.

A truly rosy future awaits the Envie de Sud! Fortunately, we are expanding our bed capacity… whether we should call our architect and construction manager to make some pressure?  Yeah, the remodeling, that’d give stuff for a whole book. But everything in its time. Let’s devote ourselves to the fine arts for the moment. We would like to introduce you to five event pearls from Vauvert and its surroundings.

Friends of jazz and photography watch out – in the first week of July we would like to go out with you guys.

Sleep late in the morning, then have a hearty breakfast, hang out at the pool and read or maybe go for a short bike ride or horseback riding tour and in the afternoon and evening we let ourselves be culturally sprinkled. We are spoilt with choice, or rather the luxury of choosing from two top events. In Vauvert itself, the highly endowed jazz concerts will take place in the arena, and in nearby Arles, the elite of international photography will welcome the 49th time on the occasion of Les Rencontres de la Photographie.

Even more jazz and a 25th anniversary will be celebrated shortly afterwards from 19 to 21 July 2018 on the occasion of Jazz à Junas.

Les Grands Jeux Romains – Spartacus 28/29/30 April 2018 in the arena of Nîmes

Spectacular and a rare opportunity for all those interested in history. More than 500 actors play in the setting of the Roman arena of Nîmes. The mood? Almost like Spartacus’ time. Wouldn’t that be an idea for the extended first of May weekend?

Festival de la Camargue et du Delta du Rhône from 7-13 May 2018

The Festival de la Camargue is especially close to our hearts. For once, it is not culture as an art in itself but the most precious cultural asset of this region: the Camargue Nature Park with its flora and fauna. There’s a lot to offer: Accompanied hikes, workshops on environmental protection and sustainable management of nature parks and, as every year, a photo exhibition with touching animal and nature shots.

This is our 5 event tips for the coming months.

Of course you are also very welcome outside of these dates. At Easter, for example, we still have rooms available.

See you soon in the Envie de Sud!

Sincerely, Ursula & Andreas

On New Year’s Eve a year ago, we were in the middle of the preparatory work for our Maison d’ hôtes project “Envie de Sud”. Get out of the comfort zone and into adventure. Let’s go into a life together according to our rhythm and gain life long experience.

And that’s exactly what happened: The sun showed up on more than 300 days, we shared our beautiful home with exciting guests and we learned a lot: How do I clean a swimming pool? How often do I have to water an olive tree? How do I repair a faucet? How do I renew a silicone joint? Which Cerfa form do I need to apply for an operating license?

Now, at year’s end, we are looking forward to a successful future for the Maison d’ hôtes Envie de Sud! And to the fact that we will welcome you soon to our home. We wish you every success in 2018 and above that good health for you and your loved ones.

And remember, dreaming about the South (or your own project) is important and great, but only taking action towards your dreams brings the desired change. If you wish, we’ll help you sort your thoughts out. You know where to find us.

Let’s start the 2018 with enthusiasm – we are expanding!

The charm of 1850 meets modern style, design classics and functionality. From May 2018, two new residential units will be ready for occupancy.

Rève bleus – Standard Twin from Euro 100 including breakfast

The stylish double bedroom with shower room, desk and reading corner. Perfect for you and your companionship.

La “tiny” en ville – Holiday apartment for 1-5 persons. Weekly price/4 persons from Euro 760 including final cleaning.

The clever two-space miracle with shower bath, functional kitchenette, inviting seating area and an extra sleeping mezzanine. The apartment offers a sleeping accommodation for you and 4 other active guests. You like the comfort of a small apartment when you travel alone or with your loved one? This new Bijou will live up to your expectations.

Redesign of the entrance area

Two flies in one sweep: We bring more light and functionality to the entrance and dining area. We create a place where you like to stay in the cooler months. For example, at the long table for a convivial dinner at the Table d’ Hôtes or for card games or reading.

Event tip for athletes: Foulée des Halles on Sunday, 4 February 2018 in Vauvert

New Year and you want to do more sports? Participation in the Foulée des Halles is also a realistic stage goal for athletes with little training. We make sure that you are well strengthened and rested at the start. Our latest hit at the breakfast table is Green Smoothies. Rich in vitamins, minerals and vegetable fats. Treat yourself to an extra kick before the start.

See you soon in the Envie de Sud!

Cordially, Ursula & Andreas

In the last few weeks I’ve been asked several times about our “Table d’ Hôtes” in the town. It smells so good when you walk past the Envie de Sud in the evening, » flattered residents and passers-by. They stop in front of the kitchen window and look. Some are shy, some are offensive. I have already offered warm, juicy lemon muffins on this occasion. The recipe is simple: lots of fresh butter, eggs, some sugar, finely sieved flour, baking powder and the juice of sun-ripened lemons. And finally, … no, I won’t tell you. Maybe in a convivial circle, when we all sit at the long table and I start chatting…

The evenings, in which Andreas and I sit together with our guests at the table, are always something special for us. The openness with which we encounter the guests is touching. The Table d’ Hôtes is more than just good food and drink. It is a gathering among like-minded people: couples, families, single travelers and us. We cook and eat with you. Usually relaxed. Every now and then I have to improvise a little bit. Whenever more guests arrive at short notice or I run out of time in the afternoon.

I cook several evenings a week for a smaller or larger group. More often on request. The concept is always the same: around 7 p. m. we serve an aperitif and appetizers. Both we and our guests get to know each other. Andreas and I translate as needed. This is going very well. Only on one evening our language skills were not enough: Czech is not in our repertoire. But with a few words of English, German, hands and a lot of good will, the conversation got off to a quick start. In retrospect, it was one of the most convivial evenings. Like-minded souls obviously always find a way.

The Envie de Sud table is almost exclusively made up of regional and seasonal products. I let myself be inspired by the market while strolling around and then put together the menu. Recently, for example, I have served the following: Battaviasalad with fried mushrooms, bacon, shallots and figs and a pumpkin-lentil coconut soup with mussels. Afterwards, we had saltimbocca of cod with saffron risotto and broccoli. A refreshing yoghurt mousse with kaki foam was the final touch. The hallmark of my kitchen: I rely on the natural flavors of the products. A dance of taste and color. I pay the main attention to the “green stuff”. Whether roasted, steamed or raw – vegetables are my personal star. Some people are amazed at what you can conjure up from a modest cauliflower.

At the moment we are only allowed to serve overnight guests at the Table d`hôtes. We don’t have a public restaurant license. French state is sometimes capricious. We are growing with the challenges of the French appropriation jungle. Whether and how and when we might turn the Table d’ hôtes into a public place will become clear in futur. We will remain true to the concept: a maximum of 15 guests, a long table and a menu at a fixed price. We are looking forward to the next weeks and months and will keep you informed.

Of course, there is another way. A couple from Vauvert booked a room with half board and enjoyed a weekend in the Envie de Sud without long journeys and without traffic jams. They would have found time for togetherness and a pleasurable experience and definitely found it, they told me at the breakfast table. They plan to come back soon.

Cordially,

Andreas & Ursula

The Vauverdoises have a passion for running

Foulées des Halles, Grand Raid de Camargue, Bip-bip Ekiden, Nocturne de Nîmes, trail du Pont du Gard… the runners and Nordic Walking enthusiasts of the Camargue are spoilt for choice. Every weekend, running clubs organize competitions and events in the region. From a fun run for the people and companies to a 100km race across the Camargue – the Grand Raid de Camargue, which takes place at the end of September.

Our Envie de Sud guest Marina travelled from Germany to start her first 100km run. In the morning she took the shuttle bus from Vauvert to Salin-de-Girod and at 7am the starting signal was given. The route leads through the unique Camargue countryside: glittering salt fields, vast ponds with pink flamingos, picturesque beaches, Camargue horses and black bulls as well as famous wineries. Passing the city wall of Aigues-Mortes, the Tour Carbonnière and the Canal de Rhône à Sète. The runners are on their own for miles. The terrain in the nature reserve is often impassable, the wind is sometimes rough and the sun is shining. This year it was joined by rain. The first drops in the region for months. A blessing for the farmers, an additional challenge for the runners.

The finish line for all participants, whether 100km, marathon or 21km is in the arena of Vauvert. After our evening jogging session, we visit the arena.  Happy faces, award ceremonies, eager helpers whirl and distribute drinks and food. The Maire shakes hands, as he does on every occasion.

Are the Vauverdoises a nation of joggers? Obviously, yes. Andreas and I joined a running club. Twice a week we train in the group. The surrounding area offers a surprisingly varied terrain through vineyards, forest paths and pastures. What we have already explored alone, we now get to know better week after week. It’s definitely getting easier in society. Some people quack. Others run quite ambitious. Many start on weekends at competitions. Some of them even at the 100km run through the Camargue described above. Recently, Christoffer, our president, suggested at the end of the jogging round, to ring the bell at club member Mike. He offered his ten surprise guests a beer. A sympathetic gesture.

On February 4,2018, the Running Club E. V. A. Vauvert organize for the 31st time the foulée of the Halles. A convivial run of 5 or 12 km for recreational athletes and running duos. Wouldn’t this be a perfect opportunity to spend a few nice days in the Envie de Sud? Get to know the wonderful area, start the running season in a relaxed way and indulge yourself with delicious food in the Envie de Sud. Devote yourself to doing nothing or read a book by the fireplace. According to experts, February also offers the best light and unique opportunities for nature observations in the nearby Centre de Scamandre or at the Maison de Grand Site near Aigues-Mortes. We look forward to seeing you.

Cordially,

Andreas et Ursula

Every Wednesday and Saturday there is a weekly market in Vauvert. Not far from the Envie de Sud, farmers and traders from the surrounding area set up their stalls and “tout” Vauvert makes a pilgrimage to the market in the course of the morning. On Saturdays, the offer is particularly rich: in addition to sun-ripened vegetables and fruit from nearby fields, fish and seafood, cheese specialties or hearty sausages, there are also many curiosities such as new mattresses. Of course, you can try out the beds. The chatty salesman has repeatedly asked us to do so. So far, we’ve done without it. Though we don’t just walk by him without curiosity. What seems to be completely normal here seems to us to be “exotic”.

The fashionable trend for young boys seems to be trainer pants with side stripes in the “flooding” version – i. e. maximum ankle-length. The stylish pieces flutter at top prices on numerous clothes stands and await interested buyers. Of course, “man” can try on this chic leg dress discreetly in the rear flap changing cabin of the delivery vehicle. It’s perfectly normal here.

Delicious scented clouds of grilled chicken or freshly prepared tellines – small mussels prepared with garlic and herbs – let us soak the water in our mouths. With the sweet Fougasses d’ Aiges-Mortes, a yeast pastry with lots of sugar and orange blossom water, we weaken and grab hard.

At Samy, the busy fish and seafood merchant, we also pass by. Shrimps, dorades, bonito, rouge, sardines, mussels, snails… the choice is difficult and we can’t get any fresher. We do our last purchases at the grocery store. The bags are always filled with everything that the season has to offer when we walk home afterwards.

Never missed in recent months have tomatoes. Real tomatoes with lots of flesh, soft skin and an incredible aroma. Countless varieties are offered. Brown tiger tomatoes, ox heart tomatoes, bottle tomatoes, green tomatoes… they’re all delicious. Without exception. Honestly, we’ve never had tomatoes like this before. There’s real life in there. Acid, sweetness, juice and bite. We like them best in slices with small basil leaves, coarse Camargue’s salt, freshly ground pepper and a few drops of fruity olive oil. A poem every day anew. We are a little nostalgic because the tomato season is coming to an end. It’s autumn.

The only consolation is that the gardens of the Camargue produce good vegetables all year round. A stroll through the market, combined with a café au lait in the hall’s bar or a pastis, is a must for your stay in the Envie de Sud. And instead of tomatoes, we will spoil you with baked pumpkin slices from the oven, served with a fine roast or a lentil dish with root vegetables and trout fillets. And in early summer they return: our beloved tomatoes. We are pleased.

Andreas & Ursula

The holiday season July and August is almost over. We were able to welcome many guests from Switzerland, France, Italy, Germany, Czechoslovakia and even Chile, Brazil and Guadeloupe. The refreshing pool was very popular and correspondingly busy. But also, the many common dinners at the Table d’hôtes with exciting encounters and talks brought life to the Envie de Sud. For us probably the moments we liked most.

We are currently investigating whether we will be able to expand some rooms. An additional double room with bathroom and a spacious family studio with kitchenette could soon be bookable. We will inform you about this.

The demand for rooms is in any case given in July and August and for the rest of the year we have a very special offer for you. We are expanding our service package and offering Envie de Sud guests tailor-made active and pleasure trips with personal care. In the language of your choice: Swiss German, High German, French or English we accompany you. Close to nature and away from the masses, we want to move. On foot, by bike and on the horse. Show you the true treasures of the Petite Camargue and make you acquainted with local experts and “originals”. In small groups from 4 to maximum 10-12 participants. The ideal stay is 7 nights.

Over the last few months, we’ve made a lot of contacts with local suppliers and partners. Undoubtedly, all the experts in your field are deeply rooted in the region and traditions. On each visit, we learn and come closer to our new home. If only the language barrier and a certain lack of drive were not … without a good knowledge of French, a visitor in the Petite Camargue unfortunately has little access to the country and the people. Even a ticket purchase at the railway station or a restaurant visit can be a nerve-racking experience. Information boards at sights or in nature reserves are held in the language of the Grande Nation. Maximum supplemented with an English summary. Every service-oriented tourist destination has to communicate in several languages. In the Envie de Sud we live this principle quite naturally.

Mireille, the new director of the tourism region, Petite Camargue, has drive too. A blessing for us and potential visitors. We have given her our energetic support for the repositioning of Destination Petite Camargue. It honors us that we as newcomers are so openly accepted and can bring our experiences. We look forward to this challenge.

Regardless of the above, the mentioned actives, which are exclusively reserved for Envie de Sud guests, are bookable immediately. We have worked out a possible travel program for a week and look forward to your call or your email. Of course, we are open to your wishes when planning. After all, we are talking about your personal holiday here.

Sincerely,

Ursula & Andreas

Gregory Porter, a singer and composer of world format, sings at the Jazz à Vauvert. Yes. THE Porter. The one with the Grammy Awards of the big concert halls. Incredible. But true. This cultural experience is, of course, not to be missed. I like the music of Gregory Porter very well. His deep voice full of warmth touches me every time from the first note. Strong and masculine in sound and vulnerable and open in his lyrics. I can hardly wait for the concert. I’m almost a little excited.

On the 8th of July 2017, it is finally time. The Envie de Sud is fully booked for the first time and I go to the arena with my guests. It is a lukewarm summer evening and we are full of anticipation. There is a festival atmosphere. Everyone is dressed casual, a drink in his hand and the fragrance of French fries and sweet crêpes hangs in the air. Super that two of my guests know the organizer of the concerts personally. They make me acquainted with Fabrice. We are talking. The Jazz à Vauvert is a branch of the established Jazz à Junas, a place just a few kilometers from here. The festival has been held in Junas for 22 years. At that time, one deliberately chose a place that is unspectacular in itself. They wanted to give space to jazz. And lo and behold. Even the big stars find the way to Junas. For 3 years also in the arena of Vauvert. For two reasons like Fabrice explained: Firstly, the Maire (mayor) is a jazz fan and secondly, the arena is very attractive as a concert venue.

Just at 9 pm Gregory Porter enters the stage. A two-meter man in a bright suit with the stature of a football player. His trademark: a dark balloon cap and a black hose scarf. He enchants us from the first note. The atmosphere in the audience is relaxed, almost familiar. Porters stage presence is impressive. He sings his big hits and fills the arena with his sonorous baritone. Gentle ballads like “Hey Laura” alternate with groovy pieces like “Don’t loose your steam” The band accompanies Porter casually and leaves the musicians room for spectacular solos. Now and then I turn around and look into the audience behind me on the steps of the arena. Lots of happy faces. Such an open-air concert always has a special flair. The music, the light, the common feeling – everything fits.

I could hear the song “Consequences of Love” in endless looping. Every note, every phrasing, every pause fits. Oh, I could cry so beautifully he sings. I’m missing my darling Andreas very much at this moment. He misses a special evening in the Arena of Vauvert. Good to know that the Festival de Jazz à Junas and Vauvert will also be held next year. Whether Gregory Porter comes back I do not know. I really hope so. But also, the other artists: Laurent Coulondre, Avishai Cohen and Cory Henry offered great concerts my guests told me. Fabrice and his partners will be bound to commit outstanding artists for next year.

So, book your room in Envie de Sud in time. Combine the visit of a few concerts with relaxed holidays with us. I look forward to your company. And did I mention that I was allowed to visit Gregory Porter after the concert backstage? Almost embarrassed, he accepted my honestly complimented compliments. His “Oh, thank you so much, my dear” is still swinging in my ears.

Sincerely, Ursula
